What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture comes from traditional Chinese Medicine which dates back more than 3,000 years. Itís based upon the holistic concept of treatment and the bodyís ability to return to its balanced state of health. The treatment takes in to account that the body is a self-repairing mechanism and any interference should be aimed at encouraging this self-healing ability.
We use a therapeutic modality of Western or Medical Acupuncture which involves the insertion of fine needles; it is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, and the principles of evidence based medicine.
How does it work?
Anaesthesia is initiated by the stimulation of a small group of nerves in the muscles around the needles which send impulses to the spinal cord. This leads to the activation of chemical production by the spinal cord and brain. The chemicals (endorphins and mono amines) are then released, which block the pain impulses. These effects are cumulative, increasing with successive treatments.
Is Acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is very safe, serious side effects are very rare - less than one per 10,000 treatments. We use single use, sterilised disposable needles for every patient.
What conditions can be treated?
Feet - Plantar fasciitis, heel pain, first metatarsal pain, metatarsalgia, Mortons neuroma, digital neuritis.
Legs - Achilles tendonosis, acute and chronic ankle pain, ankle instability, knee pain, shin splints, muscle pain.
